Background The database administrator (DBA)  requires significant interaction with internal University customers and external vendors, independent judgment, sound decision-making, and operates at variable levels of independence. The Database Administrator will ensure to keep the database up and running smoothly 24/7. The goal is to provide a seamless flow of information throughout the university, considering both backend data structure and frontend accessibility for end-users. DBA will work closely with programmers, data & system analyst and network administrators to design the proposed system.  Data integrity, backup, security and troubleshooting are critical parts of the database administration. Responsible for all data clean up and data migration from existing systems to the new UIMS platform for Students, Finance and HR.  Assist in  updating  FNU’s Data Management Policy
 
Key Responsibilities: 
•    Develop standards and guidelines to guide the use and attainment of software and to protect vulnerable information.
•    Modify existing databases and database management systems or direct programmers and analysts to make changes.
•    Write, develop and schedule standard reports requested by Senior Management.
•    Test programs or databases, correct errors and make necessary modifications.
•    Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorised damage, modification or disclosure; database backup, restore database, maintain and document backup and restore documentation, and other database-related matters. 
•    Approve, schedule, plan, and supervise the installation and testing of new products and improvements to computer systems, such as the installation of new databases.
•    Train users and answer questions.
•    Establish and calculate ideal values for database parameters, using available resources such as manuals and calculator or computer software.
•    Specify users and user access levels for each segment of the database.
•    Develop data model describing data elements and how they are used, following procedures and using pen, template or computer software.
•    Develop methods for integrating different products so they work properly together, such as customising certain University databases to fit specific needs.
•    Review project requests describing database user needs to estimate time and cost required to accomplish the project. 

 
Person Specification
Essential
Bachelor's Degree majoring either in Information System, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronics, with proven work experience in a large organisation dealing with Oracle, SQL, MySQL, Access, Performance Tuning & Capacity Monitoring, Data Security, Backup & Recovery, Standby/Failover Administration.
Desirable
Postgraduate Diploma majoring either in Information System, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronics
Professional Microsoft Certification in MS SQL Server and Oracle certification with relevant industry experience will also be considered.
Excellent communication skills with the combined ability to interact confidently with clients 
The ability to work well in a team
Proven working experience as a Database administrator in a large organisation dealing with Oracle, SQL, MySQL, Access, Performance Tuning & Capacity Monitoring, Data Security, Backup & Recovery, and Standby/Failover Administration; SSRS / SSIS. 
Hands-on experience with database standards and end-user applications
Excellent knowledge of data backup, recovery, security, integrity,  Oracle and SQL
Familiarity with database design, documentation and coding
Previous experience with DBA case tools (frontend/backend) and third-party tools
Familiarity with programming languages API
Problem-solving skills and ability to think algorithmically

Salary Base salary of FJ$43,635.00 plus 10% superannuation.
