Background This position assists the Disability Coordinator with administrative duties and oversees programs for students and staff with disabilities in relation to ensuring compliance with the University’s Policies. This position will be based at the Office of Registrar, Department of Student Services.
 
The Assistant will be specifically required to assist the Disability coordinator in: 

Providing academic advice and assistance during admission and enrollment for students: 
• Facilitating the support of students with disabilities at the university: 
• Organise logistics for events planned by the disability unit: 
• Provide specialised services such as sign interpreting services for students with hearing/speech impairments: 
• Take down minutes/notes and dictations during meetings and during classes:
• Providing support to students with disabilities with their academic work. 
• Ensuring that reasonable adjustments for students are actioned and adhered to by the relevant colleges and support divisions. 
• Meeting students to draw up appropriate reasonable adjustments that would best suit them to aid in their completing their programmes. 
• Providing scribing and supervising assistance during examinations and internal tests in collaboration with respective lecturers. 
• Facilitating the conversion of resource materials for students into accessible formats e.g. braille, enlargement of prints etc. 
• Raising awareness on disability issues in academic departments and services, including providing staff training. 
• providing advice and support for Colleges and Support Departments in: 
addressing the needs of disabled staff and students; 
Planning for and meeting the needs of students with disabilities. 
• Dealing with any day to day issues for students with disabilities outside the remit of their academic department.
 • Advising students on specialist IT software and other facilities in the University. 
• Supporting academic departments in the preparation for Quality Reviews. 
• Developing plans for increasing IT provision and other facilities for students with disabilities. 
• Monitoring and report annually the profile of students with disabilities in the University and other relevant statistical data. 
• Participate in organisations development and professional activities. 
• Ensuring the activities organised are within the budget allocations.
 • Undertaking any other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Supervisor.

 
Person Specification:
Essential:
• Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field with 3 years’ experience working at the disability sector.
• Certificates in relevant specialized fields such as disability, braille and sign language.
• Knowledge of braille and sign language.

Desirable:
• Higher qualification 
• Problem solving skills
• Team player with consistently good reports 

Salary Base salary of FJ$17,922.00 plus 10% superannuation
